Meranti
Often used as an alternative to mahogany, Meranti is an increasingly popular timber which varies from pale pink to dark red. The density of this wood also varies noticeably between sub-species, although all variants are generally easy to machine or hand work, with strong nailing and gluing properties, and a characteristically smooth finish.
Nearly all Meranti timber imported by Timbersource is of select grade or better. Pinholes are sometimes visible from ambrosia beetles, but these are killed during the kilning process. Meranti is naturally resistant to both decay and insects, and boasts a moderately durable heartwood. Click Here for more.
Balau
Balau is a Malaysian wood which is exceptionally weather resistant and incredibly durable. It is therefore naturally suited to outdoor use, and is often used for decking, flooring, construction, and outside furniture. Its silver-grey colour makes for an arresting appearance, while small grooves on one side and deeper grooves on the reverse make it versatile.
Balau timber machines well, and demonstrates a low tendency to either warp or twist. Along with its 20-30 year life span, this makes it a sought-after wood when durability and longevity are paramount. Click Here for more.
Keruing
Comprising 70 similar species from across Southern Asia, Keruing varies in density and weight, but is generally valued for its high crushing strength. The timber is relatively coarse with a shallow, interlocking grain, Keruing is normally used for lorry floors, wharf decking and other exterior construction projects. Keruing is usually easy to work, but its natural silica content will occasionally have a blunting effect on tools.
Keruing is moderately durable, it does not enjoy any resistance to termites, but is resistant to preservative treatments. However, this seldom interferes with its intended purpose. Click Here for more.
