Is Siberian Larch good for cladding?
Siberian larch is brilliant for cladding as it has a very resinous quality meaning it is very resilient to wet weather. Larch is also very easy to machine into a wide range of cladding profiles such as shiplap and tongue and groove. Unfortunately, due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the sanctions imposed on Russia, supplies of Siberian Larch are now scarce. The best alternatives to Siberian are Douglas Fir, British Larch, Canadian Larch and Canadian Cedar.
Should I paint both sides of cladding?
It is advisable where possible to apply your first coat of oil or paint to both sides of timber. This is because you don’t want to imbalance how porous one side is compared to the other. If one side dries out or absorbs more water than the other it will expand or contract differently thus resulting in cupping or curling faces.
What is cheapest cladding?
Treated white wood or tanalised Pine ready machined cladding is the cheapest wood type whereas featheredge is the cheapest profile type because you get two pieces cut from one board.
What is the best exterior cladding?
This may be a hotly contested and subjective topic due to species, shape, orientation and format all being taken into consideration. With the weather in the UK becoming more extreme in contrast from warm and sunny to cold and wet, it would be prudent to get water resistant timbers. Canadian Cedar and Iroko would be very good with this in mind.
What is the longest lasting exterior cladding?
Canadian Cedar and West African Iroko are very good timbers for cladding and also Accoya.
